Step 2 – Draw the first knuckles and fingers As you draw, you could also use a pencil at first and then go over with your pen when you’re happy with how it looks. This will then loop over with a bulge at the top for the tip of the thumb. Then, you can extend a curved line up from the wrist for the side of the thumb. You can start with a diagonal, slightly curved line for the wrist. To turn the altered scales into a killer doodle exercise, I suggest that you try this pattern. Here are some examples, based on a C altered scale:ĭb-7, -9 (it works great, even though there are some “wrong” notes”) The same altered scale can be used in many different chords with great results. The altered scale has this little edge to it, that can help you put some color to your solo. The major scales are fundamental for a lot of improvised jazz solos, but they are also a bit plain, and without spicing things up a bit, it can be a bit boring with too many major scales. This pattern is one I use a lot, both for doodling and to make sure all the scales in all the modes are up to date. There are 4 trillion chords where it is an obvious choice in one of its modes: major, major7, 13, minor7, minor6, minor9, etc. The major scale is extremely useful when you are a jazz improviser. Using them to work on doodle tonguing is a good idea. You need to be very familiar with all the major scales on the instrument. You can find some useful pentatonic patterns here. Gbmajor7, Dbmajor7, or D7alt – use an Fm pentatonic scaleībmajor7, Fmajor7 or, Gb7alt – use an Am pentatonic scale This is a real good doodle tongue workout at the same time! Try hitting different chords on the piano with the sustain pedal, and play a suitable pentatonic scale on the horn on top of it. I suggest that you work on all the twelve pentatonic scales, playing them in different patterns. That is a lot of juicy notes to get out of a simple pentatonic scale! This time, the same pattern consists of the #9, #11, b13, 7th, and b9. Out of the fridge come four trombone players, playing the unison solo It is supposed to be a true story, experienced by Thad himself, and he sat. The story behind the tune is about waking up in the middle of the night, tip-toeing down to the kitchen to grab a bite from the fridge. Or try the E minor pentatonic scale over a Db7#9 chord (or a Db7altered chord). It is really fun to play, and a benchmark for trombone players. Here you get the major 7, 9th, 3rd, #11, and 6th of the Fmajor7 chord served as a well-known pentatonic scale. Try playing an E minor pentatonic scale over a Fmajor7 chord. They are very playable on the trombone in most keys, and they sound great over many chords. Pentatonic scales are very useful in an improvised jazz solo. 450 and the bell is the size of a trumpet bell, and the slide. Since it uses a trumpet mouthpiece, it is quite different to play than a regular trombone. It is tuned one octave higher than the standard tenor trombone. Trombone harmonic series can be divided into two. The first two notes form an octave, followed by a perfect fifth, a perfect fourth, a major third, a minor third, a major second, and so on. Basically, it is all about comfort, and making things as easy as possible to play for you. Soprano trombone (or slide trumpet) The soprano trombone is basically a trumpet with a slide. On the 1st slide position chart of a trombone, you can see the notes: Bb1, Bb2, F3, Bb3, D4, F4, Bb4, and so on, where the numbers indicate the octave. That doesn´t mean that there is only one solution, try it out and find out what is most comfortable for you. In this bebop example, I have noted it the way I probably would play it. Let´s get started! MIXING TONGUING TECHNIQUESĭoodling is great, but in real life, you probably end up mixing both doodle tongue, single tongue, and natural legato with great results. This is stuff that I use a lot when I play improvised jazz solos. This time I want to share some patterns and exercises that I have found to be very useful. Doodle tongue is the perfect solution for all jazz trombone players who want to be able to play fast and precise legato lines. In the previous articles in this series, I have talked about the fundamental of doodle tonguing, basic and advanced exercises. Other ways to create a sense of separation in your studio They can also be used as a standalone design element, customizing them with images, patterns, or text that inject personality into the confined space. These work especially well when used to separate the living room from the bed or create a small office space.Īnd lastly, dividers don’t have to be functional. But even with the limited square footage, you can spot-reduce sound in certain areas of the room with acoustic room dividers. And if you share your studio with a partner, this will quickly prove to be an issue. The lack of permanent, structural walls does not bode well for the acoustics in these apartments. Improve acoustic quality in the tiny space These also work great for storing large items and hiding excess clutter – just move the divider back and forth like a sliding door whenever you need to access the area. Just slide the temporary walls into place to keep certain areas “off-limits” when visitors are over and out of the way once everyone leaves. But if you don’t want to give up hosting, portable room dividers are the best way to host without sacrificing privacy altogether. Hosting guests can be difficult, especially when your bed and entertainment space are the same space. Use portable dividers to slide in and out of host-mode Place a cardboard room divider between your bed and the rest of the room to create a private sleeping space. How to use room dividers to maximize your studio apartment space Create a sense of privacy and visual separation Here are some ways to take control of your limited space and make your studio feel like a home. And because your lease won’t allow you to make any major renovations, room dividers act as makeshift walls that help separate space in these small apartments. Studios combine the kitchen, living room, and bedroom into a single room, creating awkward spacing. How do you separate spaces in a studio apartment? And whether it’s furniture, artwork, or ornamental pieces, studios don’t leave a lot of room for anything but the essentials – you’ll have to make some tough decorative choices.īut why do these things matter? Well, if you’re looking to add a sense of privacy and structure to your studio apartment, you need to know how to get the most out of the space. This makes open floor plan studios a non-starter, making your living space feel more like a dorm room than a modern home.Įven though you’re renting, decorating an apartment makes it feel like home. Most people like things separate – their kitchen, dining room, living room, and bedroom. And because every square foot matters, there’s often no room to store seasonal wardrobe items, hobby equipment, and other personal items. This lack of floor space makes it difficult to entertain guests. The most common argument against studios is that they’re too small – the average US studio apartment is just 600 square feet. And while some may view studios as crowded, disorganized spaces, minimalists see opportunities for sophisticated and elegant designs. It reduces stress and helps you focus on what’s really important, among other benefits. In the age of over-consumption, minimalist living has made a surprising resurgence. Though communal living is quite popular, issues like lack of privacy, messy living habits, and mismatched energy are common. And while some may view the small space as an issue, studio dwellers know that this reduces the cost of utilities like air conditioning, heat, and electricity. This makes them a more sustainable living option, helping you support a more sustainable future in your home without breaking the bank or resorting to costly renovations.īecause they’re more affordable, renters can live alone rather than sharing multi-bedroom apartments with roommates. Most renters choose studios because they’re more affordable than 1-bedrooms apartments and townhomes, especially in cities and busy residential areas. Others don’t find them as charming – here’s why: The pros and cons of studio apartments Pros For some, studios are the perfect living situation. But studios don’t have to be defined by their lack of separation, especially when you can use room dividers to create structure and privacy.īut before we dive into how to use room dividers to get the most out of your studio apartment, it’s important to understand why dividers are necessary at all. Some argue they’re too small and impossible to design while others appreciate the lower cost and minimalist living spaces. Most people have mixed feelings about studio apartments. Reading shorthand was effortful and slow, especially at the very beginning for me and that gave me some perspective of how some of my classmates must have felt.We created this free graffiti text generator web app to help you to easily create and draw your name in graffiti, create your first graffiti or a graffiti logo. I have always been an above average reader and I couldn't understand how people struggled so much with it. One thing I learned from the experience was how frustrating of an experience it is if you're not good at reading. I suppose that's a matter of practice and I wasn't ready to sink hundreds of hours into just that. Learning to write and read it wasn't that difficult actually, but I couldn't quickly scan shorthand notes like I could with regular writing. There are multiple levels of shorthand, the faster ones drop more and more information from each word if it can be inferred from the context (for someone familiar with the topic, i.e. When I wasn't being careful, I could often read the text shortly after I wrote it, but after a few hours or days it became illegible to me. With regular writing, a small error somewhere can be error corrected using the surrounding context. Shorthand removes most of the redundant information that is present in regular alphabets and words. I have some experience with a German shorthand style (DEK) and it is more important to write clearly. circa 1990) for Han characters to be mostly gone from the written Korean, and I observed the final transition as a native Korean speaker. Only the specific orthographic rules and the current name "hangul" were established ~100 years ago. It uses Hangul, an artificial phonetic writing system invented about 100 years ago. > Korean does not use Han characters at all. I'm well aware that the balance has been greatly changed in recent decades though, so I'd like to be corrected if there is a well-known analysis. You are correct (I do speak Japanese), but again, the general concensus seems that average Japanese texts do have enough kanjis that make up for some loanwords. If it's something that can be written in mostly kanji, then it'll be quite compact. As I said before, if it's full of English loanwords (or worse, English technical terminology that's been adopted into Japanese), it'll likely be larger, since all that is expressed in katakana (phonetic characters). > So the space needed really depends on the content. It might be possible that some guidelines only show the character count and thus adjusted for the visual space, but I see no reason that most guidelines, primarily from professional translation companies, would get that same point wrong. There is also an inforgraphic about specific scenarios with a similar conclusion for all CJK languages. ) Other sources, for example, say that Japanese has a relative contraction of 10% to 55%, which is really variable but still supports my claim. > The only thing that was correct in your link is "varies".īecause I didn't bother to link all guidelines I've found. So what you'd really want is the language with the greatest information per phoneme divided by the total number of phonemes, or another way of putting it, how well it fits into a. If you have very few phonemes, you can group clusters together into single strokes, whereas if you have many phonemes then you may need multiple strokes for a single phoneme. Different languages have different numbers of phonemes (Rotokas has just 11, while Taa has over 100). There are a limited number of different types of strokes you can include in a shorthand system before they become too similar to each other, so you are capped in how much information per second can be written regardless of the language. So maybe Vietnamese would be the most compact if you used a phonemic system, but I actually think it's more complicated than that. I remember seeing a study about the "information density" of different languages and of all the languages covered, English was #2 in terms of information per syllable while Vietnamese was #1.Ī shorthand system is free to represent words phonemically instead of orthographically, and most languages have fewer phonemes per word than letters (or strokes/radicals/jamo if you're looking at Asian characters), so it would make sense to just always do that. |
